I don’t remember the first time I heard about Orchard St, but when I got there it was definitely love at first sight. I do remember that my first visit was to their Bondi store to grab a few juices and smoothies for a road trip up North, then a little while later I discovered their Paddington outlet and I now consider it my ‘local’ ❤️ …It’s that awesome little nook out the back where you can hide away from the world with a coffee or smoothie that sucked me in! …There is also a third store in Bronte, which was actually the first of the trilogy to open its doors in 2013.
Cleanse, Heal, Nourish, Grow… is a little statement that’s found on the bottom of every page on the Orchard St website and it perfectly encapsulates what they’re all about. This gorgeous group of Naturopathic dispensaries / cafés / stores was created by Kirsten Harvey, who is a fully qualified Naturopath, Nutritionist and Herbalist <3 Her about page says the Orchard St concept was inspired by her love of nature and her wish to use food as medicine and that most definitely shines through in all three outlets.
Orchard St is well-known for its fabulous juice cleanses, and I’ve certainly done a few since discovering them. They offer, one, three and five-day cleanses that are a combination of all their cold-pressed juices, superfood smoothies, nut milk smoothies, kefirs and herbal tea elixirs that you will see in the fridges when you visit. They do warn that none of the cleanses are ‘easy’ and by that they mean you’re not getting a predominantly fruit-based juice or a high sugar smoothie. So many others offer this sort of thing because sugary drinks sell, but to my mind, there is far less benefit in having more fruit than vegetables when you’re trying to ‘re-set’, which is why Orchard St is my preferred choice. I find them all super tasty anyway so if that’s a hard cleanse, I’ll take it!
You can order the cleanses online and have them sent out to you, but I opt for going to choose my own. I’m visual… I need to see, then choose! The recommendation is six of a mix of drinks per day and I find that’s perfect for me.
If a juice cleanse doesn’t do it for you, there are plenty more delicious things to be had at both the Paddington and Bondi stores. Large fridges beside their front counters contain lots of breakfasts, salads, snacks and AMAZING raw desserts that you can either eat in or take away. I don’t know about anyone else but just standing in front of that fridge to choose something makes me smile because it’s not often I’m faced with so much choice! I usually have to pick my way through a menu asking for this or that to be changed either for the sake of intolerance or because I’d prefer not to eat an ingredient that may have been included in a meal. Not so here… and it’s such a pleasure to visit knowing that’s the case. Some of the smoothies are very high in histamines but they can be avoided for others that are less so (although I still have them from time to time because they’re hard to resist…).
There is a small menu you can order from if eating in and they also serve a variety of warm or cold milky beverages (you can take these away too). You can either have coffee, chai or a warm cacao or choose your own herbal remedy for health and wellbeing that can be added to turmeric, cacao, matcha, chai, coffee or salted caramel then combined with one of their house-made cashew, coconut or almond milks. Isn’t that divine?! To top it off you can add a little extra magic like chia seeds, bee pollen etc if you’d like.
If you prefer something sparkly with some good bugs in it then the Wild Kombucha by Ballsy on tap is what you’ll want. If you would like to take some home with you, you can grab a bottle or refill your own on your way out. I never leave without a refill!
While Bronte doesn’t have the food and warm beverage selection that the Bondi and Paddington stores do, you will find a range of the juices, smoothies etc and a small fridge with some of those gorgeous raw treats that I’m told are also made in-house. Buy one…. SO exquisite ❤️
Aside from the food, each store carries an array of botanical teas, some beautiful organic products (candles, incense, bath salts etc) and a dispensary that contains a broad range of herbal and nutritional medicines. These will be prescribed by a qualified Naturopath who can also provide you with any guidance you need on what juices / smoothies etc would work best for you. To add to that, Bronte has a natural health clinic where clients can have herbal medicine, nutrition, massage and energetic healing consultations. It’s a veritable one-stop shop, no?!
If you haven’t been to any of the Orchard St’s put them on your list right now. All the stores are beautiful, and I mean really beautiful spaces that are very calming and create a relaxed atmosphere, which is much-needed in city life. This is all helped along by some gorgeous staff members who are always friendly and willing to give advice on the best Orchard St products to suit your health needs. Combined with the fact that all the food and beverages are truly nourishing, they have got to be some of my most favourite cafés in Sydney. Enjoy your visit ❤️
